Rafting 2008

On May 31st, we made the trek up to the Yuba River North Fork for a day of Class IV rafting. After a 4 hour drive, we began by signing away our lives on contracts that Joe tells me probably aren't enforceable.

Unfortunately bribing the camera-woman Jessica didn't prevent her from sending out this photo of Wes walking around with his googles on.

As a PhD student, Munie rarely leaves the lab and hasn't really adjusted to fashion developments in the past 25 years.

David, on the other hand, is looking good and ready to go.

Angela thought you could raft from the safety of her car, but after a bit of explanation she emerged ready for the trip.

What are you looking at, HELEN?

Wes is happy to be getting on the river. Joe however, is a bit angry and disgusted.

We divided up the rafts by car load. These were the city slickers from SF/Berkeley: Ow, Angela, Helen, David

The suburbanites brought up the second raft: Kodiak, Munie, Jane Ann, Mok, and me

The landscape was quite serene and relaxing. The temperature was about 80 in the sun, 70 in the shade - and the river was pretty chilly as it mainly consists of melted snow.

I break one of the safety rules here by letting go of my paddle's "t-grip" which is known to hit other people in the face and injure them. However, my trucker horn sign I think is worth it.

This is a class 3 rapid that Jessica had the chance to snap a picture of.

The camera man waits on the rock so he can sell us photos later.

Everyone returned successfully! David, howver, did fall out of the boat on the journey.

Cargo khakis are so cool.

Jessica did all the picture taking with her fancy waterproof camera container, so this is the only complete picture of raft #3. Jennie also managed to fall out of the raft at one point, joining our boat! (I think she did it on purpose to be on the fast raft for a little bit)

The guide here told us to say "whitewater" and I think many of us were in the middle of "water" when he snapped the photo (ahem Ow, Wes, Jennie, Munie, Angela, Jane Ann)
