Mac OS X - Convert Audio Files WMA MP3 for Free
This guide is for, on a Mac running Mac OS X:
- convert audio files from one format to another
- convert WMA files to MP3 format
Switch - download
Switch is free and allows converting from WMA to MP3. Switch Plus is available for a fee and allows converting between additional formats. This is the only program I was able to find for free to convert WMA files to MP3s on Mac OS X. One disadvantage is that it does not preserve ID3 tags.
Things That Didn't Work
- Audion - although suggested elsewhere around the web and now made free it crashed on both an Intel and PPC Mac running 10.5.2.
- Audacity - an opensource program for this purpose that required installing additional libraries to export to MP3.
- iSquint - this said my WMA files were in the wrong frame rate.
- EasyWMA - the site doesn't mention the demo's limitation of only converting the first 12 seconds of your audio file.
- ffmpegX - yikes, 50MB download and the need to install additional libraries. This wasn't for me.
